Proof of stake (PoS)
A consensus mechanism in which the right to validate transactions and add blocks is granted in proportion to the amount of cryptocurrency a participant locks up as a stake, rather than to computing power. It consumes far less energy than proof of work and is the model Ethereum adopted in 2022 (see Staking, Validator).
