Layer-1 / Layer-2
A layer-1 is a base blockchain, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, that settles transactions on its own; a layer-2 is a secondary network built on top of a layer-1 to handle transactions faster and more cheaply, then report results back down to the base chain for final security. The layered design is a leading strategy for scaling blockchains (see Rollup).
